How is it possible that this is Thanksgiving week? It seems like it was just yesterday that I was passing out Halloween candy!
I woke up two days ago and realized that various family obligations, as well as a nasty cold, had completely obliterated the first two weeks of November. If you find yourself in a similar predicament and are in need of some fast and furious decorating mojo before you host Thanksgiving, let’s talk turkey about the endless versatility of the humble wreath!

Have you ever made plans only to have them totally fall apart?
I’m not talking everyday plans like what to have for dinner, or which pair of jeans you will wear with the supremely swanky new sweater you just bought in order to achieve maximum skinniness.
No, I’m talking big plans! Grandiose even! The kind of plans you go to bed dreaming about. The kind of plans that you just know are going to turn out so incredibly awesome that people will talk about the outcome for years to come.
That’s the kind of plans I had for my Halloween decorating this year! Amazingly awesome, grandiosely spectacular plans!
But then life happened. The kind of “life” things that keep you completely off balance and valiantly fighting to keep all of the balls in the air. The kind that leaves you emotionally spent and feeling like the wrung out dish rag hanging over the edge of the kitchen sink.
And suddenly, those wonderfully awesome, amazing plans find their way to the bottom of your list of priorities. A position that pretty much seals their fate and relegates them to the “maybe next year” file.
Yep! It’s the first day of fall and the heat index is due to hit over 100° today! How’s a girl supposed to get in the mood for decorating for the early fall season?
Fortunately, since I am so unmotivated for this task today, the last half of August brought the needed fall decorating inspiration with torrential rains and nighttime temps so cool that it even confused the trees which started to change colors. Yikes! I was itching to exchange the summer patriotic beach touches of summer for pumpkins and all the elements of fall finery!
But, after all, this is Missouri which means that wild swings in weather are par for the course. So, exercising extreme self-discipline, I resisted the temptation to buy the first pumpkins and mums as the appeared at the grocery and hardware stores and I limited my early fall endeavors to my indoor decor.
If you hang around with me very long you will quickly find out that I like to think about seasonal decorating in terms of layers. By putting together a base decor layer and then adding in, or swapping out, seasonal elements, the task of decorating for new seasons or holidays becomes far less time-consuming!
If you cringe at the thought of the leaves starting to turn and readying your home for fall entertaining and holidays, I’ve got you covered! Because I think that the start of a new season should be fun and not daunting, I’m going to walk you through laying the groundwork for the coming season here at the cottage by the creek! Let’s get started!
Summer is in full swing and it is one of my very favorite seasons to decorate for! It is the perfect opportunity to combine two elements that make my heart so very happy! This year the cottage on the creek has gone all “Beach Cottage Patriotic” in its summer decor by combining red, white and blue elements with treasures from the shore that speak of warm weather celebrations!
